After the treacherous betrayal and capture of Toussaint L’Ouverture by Napolean Bonaparte, Jean-Jacques Dessalines became the revolutionary leader that finally declared Haiti’s independence on January 1, 1804. He is actually the one that gave Haiti its name (it was originally called Saint-Domingue). He declared himself the first emporer of the newly independent Haiti, and was killed on October 17, 1806 in a rebellion.
“Vive la liberté!” Long live liberty! The Kindergarten 3 class has a recitation/song for you.
